History

Welcome to the website of St Joseph’s Adolescent Inpatient Unit (AIPU). We hope you find it informative and helpful.

The AIPU opened in March 2009 and is on the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital Fairview (SVHF). We provide a range of dedicated services for young people aged from 16 up to 18 years from across the Dublin North East Area of Ireland (Louth, Meath, Cavan, North Dublin) who are experiencing thoughts and feelings which can make it difficult for them to cope with everyday life.

The unit provides inpatient care and treatment for young people who have mental health conditions like depression, eating disorders, psychosis. The unit is an Approved Centre that is closely monitored and reviewed regularly by the Mental Health Commission (governing body)

There are currently 8 beds, the unit initially opened with 6 beds with a view to further increasing in the near future. All young people have their own bedroom space.

The AIPU is part of the services provided by St.Vincent’s Hospital Fairview. It is located on the upper floor of the hospital (with lift access), below the AIPU is our adolescent day hospital. We also have a school just off site at the hospital entrance. We have access to outdoor gardens and recreation space.

All young people will be allocated a psychiatrist (Doctor) and nurse. In the initial days all young people will be introduced to the multi disciplinary team
